Story: Women and men

Childcare

Childcare

With mothering and paid employment came the expenses of childcare. In this 1989 photograph, Helen (in the foreground) has dropped off her daughter Saskia to Jan, an in-home carer (who is also holding her own daughter). Helen and her son James are checking that he has everything before they leave for his day-care centre.
