Deinstitutionalisation: mainstreaming

In the 1980s many children with disabilities were taken out of special schools and placed in mainstream schools, usually with extra teacher support. Among those who were 'mainstreamed' was Michelle Fuldseth, seen here playing with her friend Janine Smith (right) at Naenae's Rata Street School in 1986.
