Asbestos: abandoned quarry

These are the tailings of the abandoned asbestos quarry in the upper Tākaka River valley in 2010. in the 1940s and early 1950s, Australian concrete manufacturer the Hume Company blasted and crushed the ore and separated the fibres here. Among the overgrown workings are broken bits of asbestos cement sheeting, which was produced for a time in Tākaka.
