Although far more women teach than men, men are more likely to reach positions of authority. In 2006, of the 4,600 men teaching at primary level, 24% were principals, while of the 21,600 women teachers, just 4% were. Shown here are the principals of five west Auckland primary schools, who got together in 2008 to work on teaching and academic standards. Not surprisingly, four of the five were men.
