Story: Religion and society

Brian Tamaki

Brian Tamaki

Brian Tamaki is surrounded by Destiny Church pastors at his anointing as a bishop in June 2005. Tamaki is the charismatic leader of the Destiny Church, a fundamentalist pentecostal organisation which was established in a warehouse in Pakuranga,  Auckland, in 1998. It grew quickly, especially among urban Māori. By 2010 there were some 9,000 members. The church promoted conservative moral values. It organised the 'Enough is enough' march in 2004, protesting against civil unions, the lowering of the drinking age and the legalising of prostitution.
