Story: Hillary, Edmund Percival

Hillary and Fuchs, 1958

Hillary and Fuchs, 1958

After members of the trans-Antarctic expedition returned to New Zealand later in 1958, Ed Hillary (left) and Sir Vivian Fuchs held a press conference in Wellington. Some people regarded Hillary’s dash to the Pole ahead of Fuchs, whom he was supposed to be supporting, as underhand. However, many New Zealanders admired Hillary’s anti-authoritarian and self-reliant attitude.
