Medsafe officers check natural health stores to make sure they are not selling products which should only be stocked in pharmacies. They also monitor products to ensure that manufacturers are not making false claims about their effects. In 2008 Medsafe seized about $10,000 worth of stock from Peter Hardwick's Nutrition Plus store in Takapuna which did not comply with the Medicines Act 1981. Hardwick said he had been selling the products for years without any problems, and argued that Medsafe had overreacted. Medsafe said it was enforcing the law and ensuring public safety.
