Story: Epidemics

Bacteriologist John Gilruth, 1900

A man sitting at a desk with a microscope and other scientific equipment.

Bacteriology is the study of bacteria. The advent of bacteriology as a science in the late 19th century meant that scientists could identify the causes and characteristics of infectious diseases more precisely. John Gilruth is best known as a veterinarian, but he was also the Department of Public Health’s pathologist in the early 20th century. He is shown here with equipment vital to studying bacteria – microscopes were particularly important.
