Story: Epidemics

Bacteriologist John Gilruth, 1900

Bacteriologist John Gilruth, 1900

Bacteriology is the study of bacteria. The advent of bacteriology as a science in the late 19th century meant that scientists could identify the causes and characteristics of infectious diseases more precisely. John Gilruth is best known as a veterinarian, but he was also the Department of Public Health pathologist in the early 1900s. He is shown here with the equipment vital to studying bacteria – the microscope was particularly important.
