Pacific people drink more alcohol per head of population than the New Zealand average, and have higher reported rates of violence associated with drinking than the general population. Organisations such as the Alcohol Advisory Council (ALAC) have worked with Pacific groups to reduce the harmful effects of alcohol in their communities. This image of people drinking moderately during a meal was included in an ALAC booklet promoting sensible alcohol consumption among Samoans.
