Story: Anglican Church

Bishop Paul Reeves, Manutuke 1975

Bishop Paul Reeves, Manutuke 1975

As Anglican bishop of Waiapu, the church district covering the North Island's East Coast, Right Reverend Paul Reeves picks up the wero at the opening ceremony for new kaumātua flats in Manutuke, near Gisborne, in 1975. The flats were built beside the Manutuke marae on land bought from the Anglican Church. The land was originally given to the church by local Māori, whose descendants were asked for permission before it was sold.
