A group of form six students from Wellington Girls' College pose for a photo with language teacher Charles Naverne in 1891. These young women, aged around 16, dressed similarly to adult women of the time. The sexes were segregated in many formal situations, and it was considered improper for young women to be seen with men other than relatives.
