National Council of Women, 1901

National Council of Women, 1901

The National Council of Women (NCW) is addressed by Ada Wells (suffragist, women’s rights campaigner and first woman elected to the Christchurch City Council) at a meeting in 1901. Kate Sheppard, president of the NCW and leader of the campaign for the vote, sits in the chair at the head of the table (back). The council had a rocky start. This meeting was one of the last, before factionalism, and the aging and exhaustion of leading members, caused it to go into recess in 1906. It was revived in 1916.
