Auckland gas works, 1912

The Auckland Gas Company was a large company in the late 1800s and early 1900s. In this view of the Auckland waterfront the gas company's premises are in the background at middle left. In the company's first year of operation it sold 6.7 million cubic feet of gas; 50 years on in 1915, 650 million cubic feet were sold. The hundredfold increase was driven by the growing population.
