During the run-up to the 1990 election, National Party leader Jim Bolger visited Levin’s Wishart Manufacturing. He is shown here talking to employee Rachael Hirini about clothing construction techniques. Bolger told Wishart staff about his commitment to a Buy New Zealand campaign. ‘Jobs in New Zealand depend on people buying New Zealand-made stuff,’ he said. Once elected, the National government continued to reduce tariffs, and New Zealand’s clothing industry shrank dramatically.
