Christchurch’s social structure and built environment reflected the English origins of its early settlers, and the settlement became known as New Zealand’s most English city. In the early 20th century it also began promoting itself as a garden city, due to its exotic trees and extensive parks and gardens. This image combines the two representations: a floral carpet running down the city’s English-style cathedral during the 2008 Festival of Flowers.
