Devonport – then and now

Devonport – then and now

Cities were used by boosters as gauges of New Zealand's rapid progress. One way they did this was through the use of before and after images, such as these in a jubilee history of the Auckland suburb of Devonport. The top image is an artist's impression of the suburb about 1872; the lower image is a 1936 photograph shot from a similar standpoint. What was once a sparsely settled landscape has become a fully built suburb.
