In black leather and with long, flowing hair, Auckland comedian Ewen Gilmour proudly proclaims himself a Westie – the typically rough-and-ready resident of west Auckland. As New Zealand suburbs have grown older and more established, they have developed distinctive characters that are often criticised at first but celebrated later.
