Women parliamentarians (2nd of 2)

Women parliamentarians

This 1966 photo shows Labour MPs in the House of Representatives – among them, on the front bench, the long-serving Christchurch MP Mabel Howard. As minister of health in the late 1940s, she had been New Zealand’s first woman cabinet minister. Behind her is the Dunedin North MP Ethel McMillan, who was also the first woman city councillor in Dunedin, a position she held from 1950 to 1980.
