Scarlet fever, 1866

The Grey River Argus describes an outbreak of scarlet fever (a contagious bacterial infection) at Waikouaiti, north of Dunedin, in 1866. A fever hospital was built on Dunedin’s town belt reserve in 1876 in response to repeated outbreaks.
