Methane from landfill

Methane from landfill

Methane gas collected from Redvale landfill generated enough electricity in 2008 to power 7,500 homes. The landfill, at Dairy Flat in Rodney County near Auckland, was opened in 1993 and by 2009 had a generation capacity of 9 megawatts. The greenhouse effect of methane gas is 21 times greater than that of the carbon dioxide produced by burning it.
