Oil rush, 1983

In July 1983 the separate stock exchanges came together in a national exchange. Four months later the arrival of several oil rigs in New Zealand waters to investigate possible oil deposits led to speculation in oil stocks. Here, crowds peer through the windows of the stock exchange in Wellington, unable to get into the overcrowded viewing gallery.
