In the 1920s many concrete bridges, such as this one on the West Coast, were funded by the Main Highways Board to cope with the increasing use of motor vehicles. The opening of such bridges was often an occasion of considerable community celebration, with large crowds and proud speechmaking. In more isolated areas such as this road inland from Greymouth, fewer people attended, but there was a still a ribbon to be cut.
