Dunedin-based Speight’s, like many other brewers, had its own fleet of horses, drays and lorries (four-wheeled carts). The horses worked a full day, were stabled in town overnight, and were taken to graze on Pine Hill on weekends. Each horse knew its own route; when an employee hired one to pull his wedding carriage, it embarrassed him by stopping at every pub along the way.
