Northern Gateway toll road

Northern Gateway toll road

Northbound traffic queues up as it approaches the Johnstones Hill tunnel on 6 February 2009, the first day of a long weekend. The Northern Gateway toll road, part of State Highway 1 that bypasses Ōrewa, had opened on 25 January. It cost $2 for cars and $4 for trucks to use the road. Tolls were calculated electronically and there were no booths.
