‘Dobrodošli’, ‘Welcome’ and ‘Haere mai’ all greet visitors arriving in Kaitāia, in the far north. The reason that Dalmatian men ended up in this particular region was the distribution of kauri forests. Wherever these giant trees stood, they shed gum which fell to the earth. And there it lay until some value was found in it and men began digging it up in the late 1800s.
