Competitors in a multi-sport race paddle down the Clutha from Alexandra to Roxburgh. Kayak, yacht and motor boat enthusiasts all benefited from the lakes created by hydro-electric dams. The recreational use of power schemes was encouraged by many power authorities and companies; it was seen as good public relations, and a way of contributing to local communities.
