Advertisements for US products, such as this natural laxative for children, appeared in New Zealand magazines in the 1940s, yet few American products were imported. The US was the largest trading country in the world at this time, and was critical of preferential trade blocks, such as that between Britain and its empire. New Zealand’s preferential arrangements with Britain meant that trade with the United States was relatively minor.
