Cellphones became an essential accessory for most teenagers in the early 2000s. Texting allowed friends to stay in touch and organise their social lives. It also made it easier for parents to keep in touch with their children and to know where they were. A downside was the rise of text bullying, where individuals were targeted with cruel texts. Texting in class led many schools to ban cellphones during school hours. These East Otago High School pupils reacquaint themselves with their cellphones after school, in 2008.
