Until the early 1970s young New Zealand women either dressed like their mother or made their own clothes. Pioneering fashion designer Marilyn Sainty (right) began selling her own and others’ designs through her Auckland store Scotties in the 1970s. To celebrate her 40 years of dressing New Zealand up, photographer Deborah Smith (left) collected Sainty clothes from their wearers around the world and exhibited them, with their stories, at the Objectspace gallery, in Auckland, in 2005.
