Many towns and cities hold one-off and regular events that are intended to put them on the map and make money for the local economy. After failing to gain resource consent to hold street rallies in Wellington and Auckland, the V8 Supercar Race landed in Hamilton in 2008. The event contributed $28.3 million to the city’s economy, but not all businesses benefited. The central business district was very quiet on the night and restaurants suffered accordingly – race-goers ate elsewhere and regulars stayed at home.
