Engineer’s drawing office, 1956

Engineer’s drawing office, 1956

This is the drawing office of the Railways Department’s chief civil engineer. Government departments – particularly railways, public works and electricity – provided university-trained engineers with valuable practical experience. The presence of a woman is unusual, and she may not have been an engineer – even in 1969, 13 years later, barely 1% of engineering students were women.
