Advertisement for a land agent

William Searancke advertised his services as a general land agent and licensed interpreter in the Waikato Times in 1880. He took up the business after a varied career in New Zealand as a surveyor, government land purchase commissioner and resident magistrate spanning nearly 40 years. During this time he made many contacts among Māori and became fluent in the Māori language. These skills were invaluable in negotiating land deals between Māori owners and Pākehā buyers.
