Hōne Riiwi Tōia (standing, centre) and four supporters after their arrest, May 1898

Hōne Riiwi Tōia led resistance by Hokianga Māori to the imposition of taxes on dogs, land, vehicles, and the hunting of native birds from the 1890s. Following an abortive uprising in 1898, he and his supporters were arrested and tried; Tōia spent 10 months in gaol.
