In 1953, Kawerau’s first residents gathered for a community Christmas party. The town was still being built, and would grow very rapidly over the next few years. Community feeling was strong in Kawerau – resident Velma Platt remembers it as ‘very friendly. There was any sports club you wanted to join, whatever sport you wanted to play, they’d just built the clubhouse. It was usually working bees – even the swimming pool, that was dug by hand. Whatever it was, the company would always put money into it.’
