Drink driving blitz

Drink driving blitz

A police officer shows a driver the result of an alcohol breath test during a Christmas drink-driving blitz in Wellington in 2007. Breath and blood testing of drivers to detect excess blood alcohol levels began in 1969. In 1993 compulsory testing of drivers stopped at mobile checkpoints was introduced in an effort to deter people from driving under the influence of alcohol.
