Mounted strike-breakers, mainly volunteers from country areas, line up across the lower end of Auckland’s Queen Street during the 1913 waterfront strike. Behind them hundreds of strikers, shouting and throwing stones, try to prevent ships being loaded on the wharves. The large numbers of armed and mounted strike-breakers, supported by hundreds of police and a naval warship, succeeded in keeping the wharves working. After several weeks of often violent protest, the strike was called off.
