White clover and ryegrass are the basis of New Zealand pastures. The Grasslands Division of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, based at Palmerston North (previously the Plant Research Station), was the headquarters for research into better pasture species. In this 1950s trial, ryegrass plants are being measured and compared.
