Molesworth Station in Marlborough covers 180,476 hectares, and is New Zealand’s largest farm. In the 1940s Molesworth was grazed by sheep and overrun by rabbits. In the early 2000s only cattle (around 10,000) are run on the property. In 2005 Molesworth became a recreational reserve managed by the Department of Conservation and nearly 30% of the area is ungrazed. The annual muster of cattle is a major job and could not be done without horses. In summer there are about 80 horses used on the property.
