Story: Exotic farm animals

Swamp buffaloes

Swamp buffaloes

Compared with some beef breeds, swamp buffaloes are compliant animals. This is partly because they have been used as draught animals in Asia for centuries. However, the animals imported by MAF in 1991 were calves from feral herds in Northern Australia and were less domesticated. The few swamp buffaloes in New Zealand are farmed in small herds and are used to being handled.
