The Rissington Women’s Institute, formed in 1921, was the first of its kind in New Zealand. Bessie Spencer was elected its first president. In its inaugural year the organisation raised funds through a fancy-dress ball and a stall at the Hastings A & P Show selling handcrafts and baking. The money went to the families of two returned servicemen and for children’s parties.
