Lake Pūkaki stores water for power generation, so its level rises and falls according to demand. While a small amount of variation in water level is natural, the significant variation in Lake Pūkaki means that few life forms can survive in the shallow zone close to shore. The recent lake levels can be seen in the lines of gravel on the shore.
