Story: Transport of animals

The voyage out

The voyage out

A load of 1,524 sheep was brought from Britain to Lyttelton on this ship, the Derwent Hunter, in 1862. The ship was only about 27 metres long, and also carried a crew of 15, plus nine passengers. There would have been little spare room on board, and unpleasant sheep odours to contend with.
