Farm cricketers

Farm cricketers

After making hay, these farmers and labourers are getting ready for a game of cricket at Kohiwai, near Masterton, towards the end of the 19th century. Only one is dressed in whites, but they have leather balls and pads. Cricket had some appeal in country districts, especially on the pastoral east coast of both islands, but it never flourished in dairying areas.
