Story: Arable farming

Stump removal

Stump removal

Removing the stumps of trees to clear land for cultivation was hard and slow work. The stumps of small trees could be hauled out using horses, but large stumps were difficult to move. Using a tree jack like this one, which would have been anchored to another stump, was one means of doing the job in 1896.
