In the past, stud cattle were bred to meet the ideal of a breed type. Now they are also bred for their productive performance and the genetic strengths that they can pass on. However, appearance and conforming to a breed standard are still important. This beef Shorthorn won a prize at the Christchurch Show based on subjective assessment, rather than its measured performance.
