New Zealand chicken meat comes from two main breeds: the Ross, from Scotland, shown here, and the Cobb from the USA. These breeds have a broad chest, wide feet and an avid appetite which enables them to grow rapidly. They are also popular with home poultry keepers. Every one to two years new batches of fertile eggs are imported and hatched to produce a parent flock. This flock produces chickens for meat production.
