The free-draining soils at Ruawai are ideal for growing kūmara. However, cold temperatures in late spring can reduce the crop. Mechanical digging and harvesting have taken a lot of the hard work out of collecting kūmara. However, they must still be picked up by hand, as these people are doing in front of the harvester – it is a back-breaking job.
