By the end of the 20th century, the animal classes at shows increasingly featured speciality animals and pets rather than the main farm breeds. Miniature horses, which stand no more than a metre high, were introduced to New Zealand as pets in the 1980s. This one is on display at the Christchurch A & P Show. In 2007 there were more than 7,000 registered animals and an active New Zealand Miniature Horse Association.
