Mt Smart stadium is sited on a former volcano that Māori called Rarotonga. Pākehā settlers renamed it Mt Smart after Henry Dalton Smart, a lieutenant in the New Zealand Mounted Police in the early 1840s. The volcano once stood 86 metres high, but between 1880 and 1980 the cone was quarried away. A stadium was opened there in 1967, and further developed for the 1990 Commonwealth Games. Now home to Auckland rugby league, it was the site of the annual Big Day Out music festival.
