Westfield freezing works

Westfield freezing works

Close to South Auckland farms and beside the main railway line, Westfield freezing works was established by Auckland’s Hellaby family in 1908. This grainy image of the works and Manukau Harbour was taken around the 1910s. Generations of families worked at Westfield, but economic reforms in the mid-1980s made the works uncompetitive and they closed in 1989.
